Activated carbon filter system for highly corrosive VOC-laden exhaust air replaced by a state-of-the-art RTO exhaust air purification system

A producer of animal feed as well as products in the areas of food, personal care, flavourings and fragrances treats its wastewater in a central wastewater treatment plant. This generates highly corrosive exhaust air with a maximum flow rate of 35,000 Nm³/h and VOC peaks of up to 1.1 g/Nm³.

The exhaust air is currently purified via activated carbon, which no longer meets statutory requirements.

Eisenmann Environmental Technology delivered the proven Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) technology as a turnkey replacement here in 2023.

The overall system concept consists of an exhaust air dilution section with droplet separator as a safety mixing section, RTO, scrubber and piping system with stack.

The challenges include, among others:

  • High relative humidity of the exhaust air at 100% at a low inlet temperature of approx. 30°C
  • Corrosive pollutants in the exhaust air from halogenated VOCs, H₂S, N₂O and ammonia
  • Compliance with the stringent emission regulations of the LRV (Swiss Clean Air Ordinance)
  • ATEX classification of the exhaust air in the pipework
  • Particulate concentration
